The Collaborative Living Cooperative: Apple tree House - Belfast, Maine
Updated July 2026
We are a group of six adults and two kids (3 and 6 years old) living in a cooperatively-owned house on 4.5 acres just outside downtown Belfast. We call it the Apple Tree House since we have a small apple orchard in the front yard.
Being a cooperative means that we are member owned and managed. The co-op owns the house; not a landlord. We share things like decision making, kitchen, housekeeping and maintenance, conflict mediation, gardening, regular connection, meetings and event hosting. Our core philosophy is that living together — through all of its joys and challenges — makes more sense than living alone.
Our house is currently full. That said, please fill out our interest form to stay in touch because people move out and openings happen.
You’d be a great fit if you…
- Are enthusiastic about living together and either have experience living in a community or a desire to try;
- Can commit to doing 5 hours of work a week for the co-op;
- Would like to join a shared food system and cook a group meal weekly;
- Are practiced at expressing self boundaries and owning your impact on others;
- Have a desire for personal growth and learning in community;
- Are interested in decentralized governance models like sociocracy.
If all of this sounds intriguing and you want to know more, please take a few minutes to answer these questions so we can get to know you a little and we will be in touch.
If you’re interested but not quite ready to move, we’d still love to hear from you! Fill out the questions, and we’ll add you to our priority list to contact when a room opens up.
